As President and CEO of Cal Coastal, Karl Zalazowski is responsible for its overall management and success: from vision, to planning, to implementation. Karl brings a unique talent to Cal Coastal to accomplish these tasks. Karl originally joined Cal Coastal as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer in 1997 and was elevated to President in early 2010. Thirteen years as CFO provided Karl with an extensive knowledge of the inner workings of Cal Coastal. Prior to joining Cal Coastal, Karl spent 17 years in the Southern California banking industry. Karl received his BS in Business Administration/Accounting from California State University, Los Angeles, and maintains an active CPA license in California.

Wendy serves as Chief Lending Officer possessing more than 30 years of experience in small business lending. She is well versed in all of the lending programs; Farm, SBA 504 Guarantee, Micro loan, Intermediary Relending and Monterey County Revolving Loan Fund. She is very involved in the community and serves on various local Boards. She was named by the Watsonville YWCA as Woman of the Year. She is a graduate of the California State University of Long Beach.

Loree has more than 26 years of SBA specific knowledge. She gained her SBA experience with both large and small financial institutions. Loree is based out of the Salinas office and works closely with commercial lending officers at various financial institutions throughout the Cal Coastal footprint. Loree earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing/Advertising from San Francisco State University.

Jose received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1993 in Agricultural Business from California Polytechnic State University. In 1994 he began his career at Cal Coastal as a Loan Analyst and has advanced to Senior Agricultural Loan Officer. The credits he reviews include a wide spectrum of farm crops such as vegetable, strawberries, wine grapes, cattle, grains as well as a very diverse organic crop mix. Cal Coastal’s farm clients are mostly bilingual in Spanish and truly appreciate Jose’s ability to speak with them in their native language.

Clay Appleton

Since graduating from Cal Poly in 1983, Clay has enjoyed a rewarding career in the banking industry. He spent the first two years in the industry working on a World Bank funded agricultural project in the Yemen Arab Republic (a small country in the Middle East). From 1986 to his current position, he has held various positions in the commercial/agricultural banking industry; he has worked for large commercial banks and small community banks. Currently, he is a loan officer with Cal Coastal in Santa Maria.  He primarily serves small to medium size businesses and farmers by providing loans and technical assistance for short term capital needs and long term commercial and agricultural real estate financing.

Carole assists entrepreneurs with their business and financing needs in her role as SBA Manager/Loan Officer since joining Cal Coastal in 1998. She specializes in the SBA 504 lending as well as in the SBA Micro loans. She works closely with the small business owners to analyze their financing needs. She dedicates time and energy by informing and educating business owners in accessing a loan that will benefit their business. Her territory includes South Santa Clara, San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.
